"My Passion for Surfing was More Than My Fear of Sharks."
-Bethany Hamilton

This week, my family and I were in Hawaii.  Gorgeous Hawaii.  We saw the Napoli Coast, we saw hundreds of dolphins, we ate an equal amount of poke.

THE POWER SQUAD PROJECT

We also took our first surfing lessons.
We are going to be "the family that surfs together, stays together".
God help us.

We had an introduction. Learned the basics. Practiced our moves and then within 10 minutes we were in the water.
My husband and I, my 6 year old and 5 year old.

The rule follower won.
She looked straight forward and stood up.
When she crashed into the water, she got back on her board and paddled back to the instructor.
She was screaming in delight and was immediately asking for bigger waves.
She even got pummeled by some whitewash and she did what she was told, she popped out the water with all smiles, got on her board and paddled back to the waves.

My little one rode a few waves on her belly.  Screaming in fear and excitement.
She took a break and built some sand castles.
Then when ready she was ready, she went back in the water.

My husband has been trying to surf for 3 years now.
It was me that made the lesson for us.
Within the first few waves, up he went.
Up he went, down he went and back on the board again.
Over and over and over again.

Me?
If only I could listen the first time.
Step by step I went forward.
I caught a couple of waves.  It was so fun!
It was a very similar feeling to playing golf.
In golf, when you hit a good shot, you working again for that awesome shot.
It's the same with surfing, as soon as the wave was caught, man you wanted to turn and do it again.

Same thing for business.
When it goes well, then how do you repeat?

The instructor told us "Face forward and that is the direction you will go in."
So darn true.
True in surfing, true in business, true in life.

What else? I realize that it doesn't matter if the approach is like that of my 6yo, my 5yo, my husband or even me.
We all got back in the water.  We all paddled forward.
We all fell.
We all pressed forward.

Quick side note from Ashleigh.  Here are my most favorite tools ever.

  • For audio motivation - Relentless by Tim Grover. I listen to him as I was in the mornings.  My walk always becomes a power walk after listening.
  • To focus during the day I love to focus@will.  They say music helps you focus and for me it surely does.  I blare the classical music.  I am not sure how many people my age choose that over techno but either way I love it.
  • Rosemarie Groner (from the Busy Budgeter) is a friend and I just LOVE how much she gives everything away.  She tells you and anyone she can her detailed way to making money!  Start with her Pinterest Strategy Guide that is worth every penny.  Not. going. to. lie.
